Wainwright Knapp Johnston was born in Mount Savage, Maryland on December 16, 1889. He enlisted in May of 1917. He served overseas as a Private with the Company B, Fifteenth Engineers in July of 1917. In 1919 he was treated in a French Hospital and returned to the United States on February 28, 1919. He was honorably discharged on April 15, 1919 at Camp Dix in New Jersey. He died on May 25, 1919. He was buried in Highwood Cemetery. His father was Benjamin F. Johnston, his mother was Emma K. Johnston, and his siblings were Grace E. Johnston, and Edwin F. Johnston. The family lived on 423 Orchard Avenue in Bellevue.
