Your library card gives you access to physical books, movies, and more at 70+ libraries across Allegheny County. You can also access eBooks, eAudios, and more with our collection of eResources.

Get a Library Card

To get a library card you will need photo identification and proof of residence in Allegheny County.* Minors (under 16 years old) will need an adult to present id and sign for the account.

The following are acceptable forms of photo ID (must be current)

  • PA driver’s license
  • PA identification card
  • Other US state’s driver’s license
  • Passport
  • State ID
  • Military ID
  • Work ID
  • Student ID
  • Work Visa

* All Pennsylvania residents are eligible for library cards. There may be some limits to borrowing for out of county users. Out-of-State residents are also eligible for library cards with an annual fee.

Register Online

Residents of Allegheny County can register for a card online and receive instant access to a many of our eResources. If your account is validated you will also be able to visit a library in-person to check out books, DVDs, music, and other physical items. This card is valid at any library in Allegheny County.

  • Currently this service is only for patrons over 18.
  • If the system is unable to validate your information, you will be issued a temporary eCard that allows you access to electronic resources for 30 days. To upgrade to a card with full borrowing privileges, visit any County library with proof of ID and current address.
  • Please be advised that individuals residing outside of Allegheny County who do not have a current Access PA library card from their home library may be assessed a fee when completing their registration at the library.

Borrowing

You may borrow up to 999 physical items at a time from libraries across the county.** Most items circulate for up three weeks and will automatically renew up to six times if no one else is waiting for them.

Your library card also gives you access to our eResources which include streaming and downloadables from services like Libby and Hoopla. Please visit our eResources page to get up to date information about borrowing policies.

**County libraries may have different borrowing policies, please check their web sites for local borrowing rules.

Fees

LIbrary cards are free for all residents of Allegheny County. Bayne Library does not charge late fees on any item borrowed from or returned to our library. Please be aware that other Libraries in Allegheny County still charge fines.

Lost or Damaged Materials

Items that are not returned six weeks after the due date will be considered lost. You will be billed for these items. You may also be billed for items that are damaged at the discretion of the owning library.
