Purpose

The Collection Development Policy outlines the philosophy, selection criteria, and scope of the library collection. It is intended to guide library staff when adding new materials to the collection, both purchased and donated. In addition, it informs the community about the reasoning behind the selection of materials for the library.

Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the library staff to select all books, DVDs, and other materials. Library users are encouraged to make suggestions and recommendations, which staff will consider for purchase. The Library Director makes final decisions on materials in question.

Philosophy

All materials are chosen based on their value in terms of interest and enlightenment for the community of Bellevue. No materials are excluded because of the origin, background or views of its creators. Andrew Bayne Memorial Library follows the guidelines established by the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement.

Scope of Collection

Due to space considerations and budgetary concerns, the library maintains a limited collection. Our focus is on popular fiction and film, classic literature and film, children’s and teen’s materials, general non-fiction, popular documentaries, and materials of local interest.  At this time, we do not offer self-published materials.

The collection is weeded on a regular basis. Materials are withdrawn from the collection based on condition, coverage, circulation, and currency.

Selection Criteria

The library considers all acquisitions, whether purchased or donated, in terms of the following criteria:

  • Local demand and interest
  • Currency and usefulness
  • Cost and budgetary constraints
  • Existing library holdings
  • Authority and accuracy
  • Format of materials

Customer Suggestions

The library encourages patrons to suggest new materials for library purchase. Please contact the Library Director to suggest a specific title or author. Suggestions for additional purchases in general subjects areas and genres are also welcome.

Requests for Reconsideration

The Andrew Bayne Memorial Library recognizes the rights of individuals to question materials in the library collection. Concerns about materials may be forwarded to the Library Director.
